The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has announced that he and the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Serbia, Aleksandar Bocan-Harchenko, have agreed that the two countries will celebrate together the anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade.

"We have agreed to commemorate together the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism and the liberation of Belgrade. We have discussed topics of common interest, especially in areas such as trade, culture and regional security", Vucic said through a post on Instagram, after the meeting with the Russian ambassador.

He added that he also talked with Bocan-Harchenko about "the current situation in the state and region".

The anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade from the German occupier is marked on October 20. The capital of Serbia was then liberated from the Yugoslav partisans and the Soviet Red Army.

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, took part in the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade, marked in 2014. Serbia is one of the few countries in Europe that has not imposed sanctions on Russia for the war that started in Ukraine in February 2022.

On several occasions official Belgrade has condemned the aggression and violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity, but continues to cultivate warm relations with Moscow.
