Authorities in Palermo have ordered a series of checks at hospitals as part of an investigation into the "privileges" enjoyed by Matteo Messina Denaro. The 'Cosa Nostra' boss, who died last year aged 61 from colon cancer, was on the run for 30 years before being arrested.
At the center of the investigation is the network of professionals who helped hide Denaro for so many years. The authorities have discovered that the mafia leader used several false identities such as Andrea Bonafede, Giuseppe Giglio, Vito Accardo, Gaspare Bono, Giuseppe Bono, Renzo Bono, Salvatore Bono, Melchiorre Corseri, Vito Fazzuni, Giuseppe Gabriele, Giovanni Giorgi, Giuseppe Indelicato, Simone Luppino, Giuseppe Mangiaracina and Alberto Santangelo.
The clues about the possible aliases belong to existing people, all but one of whom were age-matched to the mobster.
How did Messina Denaro's health care inquiry come about?
The investigation began with the discovery at his home in Campobello di Mazara, where two medical prescriptions signed by an ophthalmologist between 2016 and 2020 were found, one registered under the name Andrea Bonafede, the pseudonym long used by the godfather, the other for a another name.
Investigators are trying to understand whether the doctor, already questioned, was aware of the true identity of the patient he visited and whether he had undergone eye surgery at one of the two hospitals. In addition to the two hospitals, the doctor's private office was also checked.
