Israel's Information Minister Gila Gamliel called on the international community on Sunday to promote the voluntary relocation of Palestinians out of the Gaza Strip, instead of sending money to rebuild the Palestinian enclave that is being bombed by Israel.
In an op-ed published in the Jerusalem Post, Gila Gamliel, a member of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, suggests "promoting the voluntary resettlement of Gaza's Palestinians outside the Gaza Strip, for humanitarian reasons," while criticizing the United Nations Refugee Agency. Palestinian UNRWA.
"Instead of sending money to the reconstruction of Gaza or to the inadequate UNRWA, the international community can participate in financing the resettlement and help the people of Gaza to build their new lives in the new host countries. We have tried many different solutions, withdrawal from the Jewish settlements of Gaza, enrichment, managing the conflict and building high walls in the hope of keeping the monsters of Hamas out of Israel. They all failed. This would be beneficial for both: the citizens of Gaza, who want a better life, and Israel, after this terrible tragedy. 80% of the residents of Gaza are refugees or descendants of refugees who were expelled from their lands during the "Nakba", the "catastrophe" that meant the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, for the Palestinian population. Many today believe that they are facing a "second Nakba" , Gamlieli said, reports Kathimerini.
Both the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, issued a warning to Israel, ruling out any forced relocation of the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip.
"There should be no forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, no new occupation, no siege or blockade, no territorial reduction ," said the American president according to an opinion published in the Washington Post.
Instead, Biden believes that "the Palestinian Authority should eventually take over the governance of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank after the war between Israel and Hamas."
"As we fight for peace, Gaza and the West Bank must be reunited under a common governing structure and ultimately under a reconstituted Palestinian Authority as we all work towards a two-state solution," he said .
From Cairo, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after her talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi that she was against the displacement of Palestinians.
"We agree on the principle of non-displacement of the Palestinians and on a political horizon based on the two-state solution ," she said.
