US envoy Steve Witkoff said on Thursday that "a lot of progress" has been made in peace talks in Ukraine and that negotiations have stalled on a final issue, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Switzerland for talks with US President Donald Trump.

Zelensky had said earlier this week that he would not attend the annual World Economic Forum in Davos and would stay in Kiev to focus on the energy crisis in Ukraine, where Russian air strikes on electricity infrastructure have left parts of the capital and other regions without electricity.

Zelensky had said he would travel to Davos only if he could sign a deal with Trump to resolve the nearly four-year war that included security guarantees and funds for post-war reconstruction in Ukraine.

However, on Wednesday, Trump announced that he would meet with the Ukrainian leader in Davos. Zelensky's spokesman said in a statement that the Ukrainian leader would meet with Trump at 1:00 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT) before giving a speech at 2:30 p.m. (13:30 GMT).

Witkoff has held talks in recent days with Ukrainian officials in Davos, following weekend discussions in Florida.

He was due to visit Moscow along with another US envoy, Jared Kushner, on Thursday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a possible plan to end the conflict, the deadliest in Europe since World War II.

The Kremlin said Putin's meeting with Witkoff and Kushner would take place after 7 to 8 p.m. Moscow time (16:00 to 17:00 GMT).
