Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a harsh and direct message to European countries at the Davos Economic Forum, accusing them of a lack of political will and an inability to protect themselves in a world where danger is increasingly present.
“ Last year I ended my speech by saying ‘Europe must know how to defend itself.’ A year has passed and nothing has changed ,” Zelensky said. He compared the reality Ukraine is experiencing to the movie “Black Hawk Down,” emphasizing that while no one would repeat such a tragedy for years, this is exactly the everyday life of the Ukrainian people. He further emphasized that while the world watches the bloody protests in Iran and waits for the US to take action, Europe is silent.
In another diplomatic attack, Zelensky criticized the fact that Nicolas Maduro, the former president of Venezuela, is currently on trial in the US, while Vladimir Putin is not. “ Putin is fighting for frozen funds in Europe. When the moment came to use them to help counter Russian aggression, the decision was blocked. Europe is not even trying for a Tribunal on the damages of aggression. What is missing, time or political will? ” he said.
The Ukrainian president further accused: “ Europe always talks about the future, but why doesn’t it talk about the present? Why can Donald Trump stop Russian oil tankers, while Europe does not act, even though they pass near its shores? ” He denounced the chronic passivity of Europe, which “always expects NATO to protect it” and ironized the fact that the symbolic sending of 40 soldiers to Greenland does not convey any credible message to Russia, China or Denmark.
Zelensky recalled that in 2020, Europe did not react to help the people of Belarus who were protesting for democracy. Today, he said, “Oreshnik missiles are in Belarus and are irradiating several European countries.” He accused European countries of having entered a “Greenland mode,” where hope is placed in someone else’s action, while the forces that want to destroy Europe do not wait a single day. At this point, he directly mentioned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as a symbol of a Europe that has lost its way.
Another serious criticism was about the lack of active military support. “ We spent last year talking about long-range missiles for Ukraine, today there is no more talk. There is no mention of the German Taurus missiles, nor the Tomahawks, so as not to spoil the mood of the Americans ,” he said ironically.
However, Zelensky confirmed that despite the difficulties, Ukraine has made steps forward towards a possible peace. “ Ukraine has been invited to the peace board with Russia and Belarus. Europe still does not have a common position, has not decided what to do. But we cannot accept that someone else decides for us ,” he said.
In his speech, Zelensky confirmed that he had met with Donald Trump today and that their teams are working closely every day: " It is not easy, but the documents are almost ready to achieve peace. The defense of airspace was also discussed. I hope that the US will continue to be with us. We are ready to stand with the Europe that is worth it, because you will also have to defend your way of life tomorrow ."
At the end of the speech, with a strong call: “We need action, world order comes with action. Let's close the cycle of 'Ground Hawk Day'. Yes, it is possible. Glory to Ukraine!” The hall erupted in a huge standing ovation.
In a significant development, Zelensky confirmed that US representatives will be in Moscow today and that a trilateral meeting between the US, Russia and Ukraine will take place in the United Arab Emirates tomorrow and the day after. “ I hope the Emirates know this. Sometimes we have surprises from the American side ,” Zelensky said with an ironic expression. He added that Ukraine is working with complete honesty and that “ Russia must be ready to end this war .”
