Peace Board, Germany against Trump: A world where only power matters, there is
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Europe to renew its trust in NATO after US President Donald Trump's threats to take control of Greenland destabilized the alliance, warning of a changing world order in his speech to the World Economic Forum.

"We must not abandon NATO," he said Thursday. "We must repair the trust on which the alliance is built. Europe knows how precious it is, we strongly believe that it can be the strongest competitive advantage of the United States."

After a week of diplomatic chaos caused by Trump's demands that the US buy Greenland and his threats to impose tariffs on his European allies, Merz reiterated Germany's support for Denmark and the Arctic island.

Merz has called on Europeans to quickly adapt to the changing dynamics of political power in the world, while not saying a word about the Peace Board, which Germany rejected.

Russia's attack on Ukraine has ushered in a new era, an era that extends far beyond this war of aggression, the Chancellor said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) also sees a radical change in the foreign policy of Germany's most important ally, the United States.

"The world is currently witnessing a radical reorganization of US foreign and security policy," Merz said Thursday in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. A new world of great powers is emerging, "based on power, on force and, if it comes down to it, on violence," he added.

“A world where only power counts is a dangerous place.” This applies “first to small states, then to middle powers, and finally to great ones.”

The Chancellor called for taking fate into our own hands and not allowing us to become the pawn of the great powers.

“We are not helpless at the mercy of this new world order,” Merz stressed. “We have a choice.” Merz spoke about Germany’s role in this new era, emphasizing that Germany wants to play a “key role” in defending a rules-based world order.

Merz seeks equal partnership with the US

In his speech, the German Chancellor, a staunch transatlanticist, also referred to the transatlantic relationship.

He stated that the partnership between the US and Europe should be based on equality: "Autocracies may have subjects, democracies have reliable partners and friends."

The greatest strength comes from the ability to form partnerships and alliances built on trust and mutual respect, Merz stressed without directly mentioning the country he was referring to in his criticism. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned the US that it must cooperate more directly with its European partners.

But “despite all the frustration and anger of recent months, let us not give up on the transatlantic partnership prematurely,” he said. In light of rising tensions with the US, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has called for the transatlantic partnership to be saved.
