Zelensky: Trump supports retaliatory attacks on Russian energy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said US President Donald Trump told him that Kiev could respond to Russia's attacks on energy infrastructure by acting in kind, as Ukraine continues operations against Russian refineries.

"If they attack our energy, President Trump supports our responding with [attacks on] energy," Zelensky said in an interview with Axios, published on September 25.

He added that Trump has also given the green light for retaliatory strikes on Russian military facilities. However, Zelensky suggested that these facilities may be more difficult to hit because they have a high level of protection.

Zelensky's statements come days after he spoke with Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23.

The meeting was followed by a sudden shift in Trump's stance, when he said that Ukraine could regain control of its borders "with time, patience and financial support from Europe and, especially, NATO."

“[Russian President Vladimir] Putin and Russia are in BIG trouble,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, suggesting that economic problems were one of the reasons he expressed confidence in Ukraine’s capabilities.

The Kremlin denied this claim on September 24, although it acknowledged that "yes, Russia is facing some tensions and problems in some sectors of the economy."

Zelensky said he told Trump that Ukraine has drones that can reach deep into Russian territory.

Kiev has been continuing its attacks on Russian oil refineries lately. The day after Zelensky's meeting with Trump, Ukraine attacked the Salavat oil complex, one of the largest in Russia.

Salavat is located about 1,500 kilometers from the front lines in Ukraine./ REL
