The US media was filled with anonymous statements from Trump administration officials over the weekend about the possibility of ground operations against Iran. However, the Pentagon has made almost no official statement, the BBC notes.
According to the network's State Department correspondent, Tom Bateman, during the first two weeks of the crisis, US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, held press conferences every other day, along with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Caine.
Although these conferences were organized in a controlled manner and with limited access for journalists, they offered at least an opportunity to raise formal and challenging questions to the US military.
However, according to the BBC, no such conference has been held for 11 days.
The report also notes that over the past six months, US government agencies, including the State and Defense Departments, have held almost no press conferences. This practice is intended to avoid covering the president's daily statements or briefings by his spokeswoman, Caroline Leavitt.
In this context, the lack of official communication from the Pentagon contrasts with the flow of information from anonymous sources, creating a situation where public information on military developments remains limited and fragmented.
