"We do not recognize the falsified results ," said the head of Georgia's largest opposition party United National Movement, Tinatin Bokushava. Over the next few hours, the government's opponents will agree on a joint plan of action.
"The Central Election Commission has implemented the dirty orders of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili," Bokushava said. Ivanishvili is the founder and honorary chairman of the ruling pro-Russian party Georgian Dream.
After counting the majority of votes, the election commission said that the ruling party has won an absolute majority. The 68-year-old Ivanishvili celebrated his victory immediately after the polls closed.
Coup d'état
Even the pro-European opposition coalition "Coalition for Change" declared that it would not recognize the results.
"The elections were stolen from the opposition, this is a coup against the state and the constitution and an abuse of power," said politician Nika Gvaramia.
At a press conference he said the election was rigged using a sophisticated technological scheme, but gave no details.
For the elections in Georgia, several parties had created electoral alliances. About 3.5 million people were invited to vote. According to preliminary information, voter turnout was around 59 percent. Georgia is a candidate for EU membership, but the process has been suspended due to controversial laws./DW
