Russia will open voting centers for the presidential elections in the United States in March in three of its diplomatic missions or consulates in the country, the Russian ambassador in Washington announced today.
This announcement comes as relations between the two countries are at their lowest level since the Cold War, due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Russia, which is under a series of Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has yet to decide whether to open polling stations in European countries it considers "hostile".
Presidential elections in Russia are scheduled to be held on March 17. President Vladimir Putin, who has led Russia since 2000, has announced his intention to run for a fifth term.
Therefore, he can stay in the Kremlin at least until 2030, when he will be 78 years old. Therefore his re-election is considered almost certain in this country where all real opposition has been suppressed.
"In the USA, we plan to open three voting centers: in our embassy in Washington, as well as in our consulates in New York and Houston" , said today the Russian ambassador to the USA, Anatoly Antonov in an interview released by his embassy.
The US is sending equipment to Ukraine against Russian forces, and Western countries have imposed heavy economic sanctions on Moscow.
Russia announced last week that it has not yet decided whether to open polling stations in Europe.
The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, referred to the requests to guarantee their safety and clarified that a decision will be made before the end of January.
Thousands of Russians have left their country and many of them reside in European Union countries, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
