Heavy snow and rain across Germany on January 17 caused hundreds of flights and train lines to be canceled and schools to close.
At Frankfurt airport - which is the largest airport in Germany - more than 500 flights have been cancelled. Meanwhile, in Munich over 250 flights that were expected to land and take off were also cancelled.
Saarbruecken Airport in western Germany was closed, while airports in Düsseldorf and Cologne were also affected by flight delays and cancellations.
National train operator Deutsche Bahn has canceled some long-distance journeys and announced that the maximum speed of its high-speed trains will be limited to 200 kilometers per hour due to the extreme weather.
Rain across western and southern Germany has also caused icy roads, resulting in many road accidents on Wednesday morning. As a preventive measure, many schools and nurseries in the country have been closed, while some companies have offered their employees the opportunity to work from home./REL
