Over 145 firefighters and 25 vehicles are engaged in a large-scale firefighting operation in an area of the Municipality of Ierapetra, as the flames have gotten out of control.
Water tankers, construction machinery, and local residents have also been engaged to assist the firefighting teams.
Authorities called on residents of the settlements of Ferma, Agia Fotia, Galini Achlia and Koutsounari to evacuate and move towards Ierapetra.
Firefighters from all over Lasithi and neighboring prefectures, volunteers and residents are working on a front that is now heading dangerously towards the settlement of Ferma.
The fear of the fire spreading to residential areas is now evident and authorities are urging citizens to strictly follow evacuation instructions.
The fire broke out shortly after 4:00 p.m., east of Ierapetra, between Agia Fotia and the settlement of Skinokapsala.
The fire is burning uncontrollably, with smoke even covering the sea near Makrys Gialos.
