AKEP and the license scandal: How corruption and political influence are paralyzing the communications and internet service sector in Albania...

Nuriu must renew his contract with AKEP. His company has been operating successfully in the market for more than 10 years and under other conditions, this renewal would be nothing more than an administrative formality for the renewal of the Internet service provider license. But Nuriu is unable to work. In the last meeting, with Gentian Sala's loyal envoy, in a conference room, he was told that "the game has changed" and the AKEP chairman expects "his gratitude".

It is understood that, to protect his identity, Nuriu is not the real name of the administrator of an ISP business that has been circulating around state offices for weeks. But the concern is real, as much as the scandal that has engulfed the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority alias AKEP. Even though it has not been a year since he was appointed head of AKEP, Edi Rama's former advisor on relations with Kosovo, son-in-law to a prominent family in Tirana and close friend of a director with dubious connections in Kosovo and Serbia, is wreaking havoc.

By his order, AKEP has blocked every process of granting and renewing licenses and the price of the envelope for the chairman is not less than 5000 euros. The new power magnates have a heavy hand. Hiding behind the process of controlling procedures, Gentian Sala has paralyzed the institution while the open auction among internet companies has put business in difficulty.

It is said that the news has reached the Prime Minister and the latter has warned that if this situation continues, it will be Rama himself who will take the situation into his own hands. But the AKEP chief continues to defy. They say that the Prime Minister is indebted to him for a very expensive service, for which Sala has a SPAK file and which 'Pamphlet' will write in the coming days.

It is also said in the corridors of the Prime Minister's Office that Sala has deep roots in Kosovo and Serbia and that the man he worships is E. G., whose hours of freedom are numbered. So the new rulers are much more complicated than those we are used to so far.

They are the fourth-term tycoons, capable of challenging not only the law and business but also the Prime Minister himself, whose services they have rendered in his honor they shake like stones./ Pamphlet
