According to the data published by INSTAT, for foreign trade, it turns out that the value of imports in the first nine months of this year reached nearly ALL 666 billion, or 2.4% more than in the same period a year ago.
If we analyze the figures according to the group of goods imported during the January-September period of 2024, we notice that the import has been very dynamic, where "Machinery and Equipment" leads with a value of 176.2 billion ALL.
"Food, beverages and tobacco" are ranked second with 117 billion ALL and then imports of "Construction materials and metals" with 92.3 billion ALL, which once again confirm the growth of the construction sector, which is a key factor for development economic. In contrast, less chemical products as well as textiles and shoes were imported compared to the aforementioned categories.
The import of food, this category that occupies the largest share of consumption in Albanian families. How has the import for each category changed in a year?
The highest growth is attributed to the "machinery and equipment" category with 11.1%, followed by "food" with 7.8%. So, the figures confirm that the exposure of the Albanian market to food imports has increased. In contrast, the category "Leather and leather goods" experienced the highest decrease, where we imported 16.5% less than a year ago.
But who supplies Albania with food? Albania relies on a wide range of trading partners to ensure the supply of food, drink and tobacco. According to the data, Italy is the main supplier with 20.4% of the total import.
Next, Greece ranks with a participation of 12.3% in total food imports. These two countries together account for more than 1/3 of the total food imports.
On the other hand, Serbia with 7.3%, and Poland with 6.2% are also important suppliers for Albania. Germany, although a major trading partner in many other sectors, accounts for only 3.7% of food imports. From countries outside Europe, Brazil occupies a small part with 3.6%, while Turkey and Kosovo each account for 3.5% of the total import./ Scan
