Economist Dritan Shano has explained what is happening with the strengthening of the lek in relation to foreign currencies.
"Today it is happening that all Albanians who have their savings in euros and their work in euros, are 40% poorer. It's one thing I don't like. It is not something that happened now, it started with the insistence of the Bank of Albania for the deuroization of the economy. I was against it, since the economy cannot be put at the disposal of the Bank of Albania's need to have effective policies. The Albanian does not believe in the lek, the government or the Bank of Albania, but believes in a foreign currency", Shano declared for A2CNN.
"Albanians collect the euro to be indifferent to the Bank of Albania and the government, to protect themselves from them. The government attacks the euro unstoppably and it is not known when it will stop", added the economist.
Further, Dritan Shano showed who benefits from this strengthening of the lek.
"We are a country with few foreign investments and the strong lek drives these investments away, they disappear. This policy has greatly damaged the future of our economy. In theory, it would reduce inflation, but we are seeing that inflation will not know about this strengthening of the lek. Inflation, during all these years, is 13-30%. So, what do I need hardcover for? Measures should be taken to weaken the lek. All importers benefit; the government benefits from reducing debt costs; benefit those who import electricity", emphasized Shano.
