Inflation in June has registered the highest level in 16 months. During June, INSTAT says prices increased by 2.4%, and the main reason was the increase in food prices. Vegetables, oil, milk and meat are all costing more, even though they are in the production season.
"Look, 1 thousand lek plums in your own meal. Grapes. Everything is expensive and why are we in their season," says a citizen.
In a country where the sun illuminates every corner of the earth and the markets are full of tomatoes, vegetables and summer fruits, prices are rising as if we were in the middle of winter! June inflation has marked the highest level in the last 16 months, with a 2.4 percent increase.
"The fruit and vegetable season. If we were to compare this June with last June, they had higher prices. It's not perception, but reality," economic expert Klodian Muço told A2 CNN.
But don't think that it's the luxuries that are weighing down our pockets... No! It's exactly bread, milk, oil and meat... that is, the very survival basket. Food inflation crossed the "red line" last month, reaching 3.5 percent.
Today in Tirana markets, tomatoes are sold for 150 lek/kg, cucumbers for 100 lek/kg, potatoes and onions between 80-100 lek/kg, or peppers up to 180 lek/kg. Similarly, watermelon is fixed at 50 lek/kg and melon at 100 lek.
"It is a period historically with rising inflation due to increased consumption as a result of the arrival of Albanians in the Homeland, but also from tourism," said expert Klodian Muço.
And according to experts, inflation would be even higher if Albania were not experiencing population aging at these rates.
"Pensioners are more likely to consume fewer things. Unlike an average citizen who buys food, clothing, etc.," emphasized Muço.
Despite the increased tourist flows, inflation in bars and restaurants in June fell to 1.7 percent from 1.8 percent in May. /A2 CNN
