In Albania, 1 in 4 people is a pensioner, find out which are the two youngest

Demographic indicators speak of a decline in the number of births and an aging of the country's population from year to year, thus producing more retirees. Without taking immigration into consideration, the data show that the number of the population is falling at a rapid pace, influenced only by the decline in births and the fertility index. In 2022, the county with the largest average population in Albania was Tirana, with 922,386 inhabitants, followed by Durrës county with 290,561 inhabitants.

At the same time, the two counties with the smallest average population in 2022 were those of Gjirokastra and Kukes, respectively with 54,296 and 72,133 inhabitants. During the year 2022, only the population of Tirana county has increased, while all other counties had a negative rate of population growth. If we come a little closer in time and analyze the figures of the third quarter of the year in terms of births, we see that the district that recorded the lowest number of births was Gjirokastra with 115 births in total. This district has been shrinking throughout the past year.

"Scan Intel" has analyzed the data of the "Social Insurance Institute" to understand the distribution of the retired population according to regional directorates. The data published by ISSH belong to the period January-June of 2023, where during this period it results that in our country 579,877 individuals benefit from old-age pensions in total, if we analyze urban and rural pensions together.

From the INSTAT data, referring to the "Regional Statistical Yearbook", we conclude that from the distribution of the population according to the three main age groups, in four counties there are more young people compared to the elderly, while in the other eight counties the number of young people is smaller than the number of elderly people, namely in Berat, Elbasan, Fier, Gjirokastër, Korçë, Lezhë, Shkodër and Vlorë.

The figures show that Gjirokastra is the oldest county in the country. There are a total of 23,837 pensioners in this district, while the population registered in January 2023 in the district of Gjirokastra is 53,314 inhabitants. So in Gjirokastra 1 in 2 residents are retired. If we were to calculate how many pensions are distributed per 1,000 inhabitants, we say that 447 pensions are distributed in Gjirokastra. It is followed by the counties of Vlora, Berat and Fier, where the pension coefficient/1,000 inhabitants is respectively 306, 293 and 255. Expressed in nominal terms, we say that pensioners in these counties constitute 31%, 29% and 28% of the total population.

In the middle of the ranking are counties like Elbasani, Lezha and Shkodra. On the other hand, the population is younger in the district of Kukës, Peshkopi and Durres. In these counties, 154, 184, and 180 pensions per 1000 inhabitants are distributed, respectively. If we refer only to the year 2022, according to INSTAT data, the largest number of pension beneficiaries per 1,000 inhabitants was the district of Gjirokastra with 491 beneficiaries, while the lowest number of beneficiaries was Tirana with 186 beneficiaries per 1,000 inhabitants. ./ SCAN
