The devaluation of the European currency by almost 20 points against the local lek in the last 2 years, but also the loss caused to Albanian entrepreneurs, mainly exporters, have caused the latter to change the geography of trading products in order to survive as businesses.
Concentrating on the closest countries and losing important trading partners due to high costs is the solution that entrepreneurs are pursuing.
Exporter Filip Gjoka says to A2 CNN that: "The long distance, the transport costs that have increased and the speed with which the goods go to Germany make it last for days and the product spoils."
In May, Albanian exporters reduced their exports to many countries. The highest decline is recorded with Italy 23.7%, Greece 2.7% and Germany 1.5%. Encountered in this situation, exporters are finding solutions in the region. With Kosovo, exports increased by 3.9%, followed by North Macedonia by 20%.
While imports, on the other hand, recorded a decrease for May. Albania bought fewer products from Italy, China and Germany, while increasing trade with Turkey, Greece and Spain. A month ago, trade exchanges with EU countries accounted for 57.3% of all trade, a decrease compared to the beginning of 2024.
