March 8th and men who give flowers

March 8th is a small reflection of this paradox...

Every year, on March 8, flower shops have their best turnover of the year, restaurants are booked and men are reminded that there is a date on the calendar called “Women’s Day”. It almost seems like a strange ritual because, for one day a year, Albanian male-dominated society decides to be kind, considerate and even sensitive. A kind of symbolic truce between patriarchal mentality and modern consciousness but it happens one day a year.

From the way this day of the year is celebrated, it seems as if March 8 is more of a men's holiday than a women's. Men give flowers, take pictures, and feel at peace with themselves for a moment. It's a small form of moral rehabilitation, a bouquet of flowers to make up for a whole year of stereotypes, prejudices, and everyday paternalism.

On a deeper psychological level, this ritual says something about how Albanian society works. We have a special ability to turn social problems into symbolic celebrations. Instead of confronting real inequalities, we cover them up with ceremonial gestures. The flower thus becomes a gentle metaphor for a reality that is often not so gentle.

The irony is that our society has a paradoxical relationship with women. On the one hand, she is poetically glorified as the Albanian mother, the strong woman, the pillar of the family, on the other, in practice she is often asked to shoulder a double burden, to be both a professional at work and a guarantor of traditional order at home.

In this sense, March 8 is a small reflection of this paradox. It is the day when men become romantic for a few hours, while women smile politely, perhaps even with a little irony because they know that the next day everything returns to normal: in the usual comments, in the usual stereotypes and in that silent culture where equality often remains a beautiful idea on paper.

Perhaps for this reason, March 8th should not be seen only as a holiday. It can also be a small moment of reflection for Albanian men, a simple question that goes beyond flowers and dinners. Not what we give for one day, but how we behave throughout the year.
