We are all pursued by a devil and we also all the time follow the devils of others who pull us into darkness, into a dead end, into vice and sin according to religious doctrine...
This photograph showing a Catholic priest chasing a shadow, while being chased by his own shadow, was taken in Shkodra, somewhere in Gjuhadol.
When I had to find a caption for my exhibition "Unknown Albanians," I decided to title it The Devil and the Priest.
Many people who have seen it have asked me what the meaning of this photo is, and then I explained to them that every priest is haunted by a devil because removing the devil from our lives is the reason why priests exist.
However, this explanation would be valid for each of us, because we are all pursued by a devil and we also all the time follow the devils of others who pull us into darkness, into a dead end, into vice and sin according to religious doctrine.
So the Devil and the Priest will continue to be together, inseparable, sometimes fighting and sometimes walking peacefully through the streets of Shkodra, as happened that day when I photographed them in Gjuhadol.
By the way, anyone who wants to see The Devil and the Priest can do so by going to my photography exhibition which will be open until April 30th at COD.
