An antidote to pessimism
I know it may seem surprising to many, but there is no country in Europe that has achieved more than us in 112 years. Here's a simple account of the things that a century ago we lacked while everyone else had.
We had weapons but no army.
We had guards but no police.
We sold and bought but we had no currency.
We had savings but no bank.
We had cattle, but we didn't have agriculture.
We were moving if we didn't have a road.
We sang but we didn't have opera.
We used to learn if we didn't have schools.
We read if we didn't have books.
We wrote but we didn't have an alphabet.
We were getting old without pensions.
We used to get sick if we didn't have a hospital.
We used to fight but we didn't have courts.
We used to dance but we didn't have a newspaper.
We would kill if we didn't have prosecutors.
We used to steal if we didn't have a prison.
We traveled but we didn't have a train.
We used to run but we didn't have sports.
We used to complain if we didn't have a party.
We had enemies but we had no power.
Sorry, but we didn't have sacred books in Albanian.
We used to go to the sea if we didn't have tourism.
We fished but we didn't have a fleet.
We were getting married but not getting a divorce.
We were working but we had no insurance.
We drank water but we didn't have water supply.
We produced but we didn't have factories.
We had friends but no hotels.
We had forests if we didn't warm up.
We had minerals but we didn't extract them.
We had children if we didn't have a nursery.
We used to tell fairy tales but we didn't have literature.
We had rivers but no electricity.
We used to transport but we didn't have cars.
We were governed but did not vote.
We used to carry letters if we didn't have a post office.
We used to draw but we didn't have a painting.
We were dreaming if we didn't have a cinema.
We used to dance but we didn't have concerts.
We imitated if we didn't have a theater.
We used to recite but we didn't have halls.
We would get infected if we didn't have vaccines.
We had properties but we didn't have cadastre.
We were studying but we didn't have a university.
We would go crazy if we didn't have the madness.
We were left orphans if we didn't have an orphanage.
We suffered from heart problems but we had no doctors.
We had windows but no glass.
We used to beautify ourselves but we didn't have a mirror.
We had sun but no light.
We were born without being counted.
We were dying if we had no hope.
We were proud but we didn't have an anthem.
We had neighbors but we had no borders.
We had a flag but no spear.
We had a homeland but we didn't have a state.
We wish we didn't have holidays.
We had winter but we didn't have November.
We were Albanians but we didn't have Albania.
