The police fence at News is like the icing on the regime's European cake

A country that attacks the media so openly has no chance of joining Europe in the foreseeable future. Because what happened today with SS24 went beyond the Erdogan model...

When Edi Rama suddenly unleashed his fury in Theth, there were those who naively believed that a fourth term would finally put Albania on the track of a state governed by the rule of law. As if to further reinforce the false idea of a state where only the law would rule from now on, after the Theth riots came those of Tirana.

This time, lawlessness was manifested in the tents of the traders, which had occupied public space, challenging not only the ambition but also the future of a country that was preparing to enter the European Union.

Although the tent action was tainted by selectivity, this did not in any way detract from the true purpose of the Multi-Act Theater. And of course this was not the installation of the rule of law, but the installation of something else, which would become a little clearer in the next action.

Behind the scenes, the director had lined up the new Penal Code. The bastard draft with 900 or so articles, whose father is nowhere to be found, except for a clown who publicly raves about being the most honest man in Albania, will most likely never be approved.

Because the director, or rather the regime, never had the goal of adopting a modern Code that would regulate the behavior of society in the new European Albania. Its real goal was to instill fear.

And as if the three consecutive tests of the Russians and the Code were not enough, this Sunday the Albanians were served a fourth. Since the early hours of the morning, dozens of police were unleashed on the News 24 editorial office, surrounding the television station and brutally cutting off the transmission signal.

The police fences in a television newsroom are a sight that Albania last saw in the distant years of the last century. But while the regime's prompters will now diligently spin the thesis of Irfan the Terrible in public, who does not pay taxes and has occupied public property, this is the most insignificant thing of all.

News 24 was not struck by the fact that Rama has a conflict with Irfan Hysenbelliu or that the government, which divides Albania daily among its clients, cares about public property and a ruined building somewhere in Shkozë. Irfan simply had the bad luck of being assigned to be the collateral damage of an operation much larger than him. This is the installation of fear, which began in Theth and culminated in the News editorial office.

But if the goal is to instill fear, the truth he reveals is much more tragic than that. The fence of uniforms at the doors of a media outlet is the most blatant unmasking of one of the greatest public mockeries in the history of the Albanian state. This is the promise that Albania will enter the European Union by 2029.

A country that attacks the media so openly has no chance of joining Europe in the foreseeable future. Because what happened today with SS24 went beyond the Erdogan model.

With Erdogan, we were up to the ABC version, that opposing media are bought by the regime's crutches. This News brings Albania closer to Putinism. And believing that Albania will join the EU within 2029 is the same as believing that Russia will join a year later.

Edi Rama himself is clear that the EU has no membership plan for Albania. And even if it really did, that plan would have finally fallen apart this Sunday. But the story of membership was born as a promise to fill the emptiness of governance and to balance the closing of Edi Rama's door in Washington. These were the reasons that forced Edi Rama to become a Eurocrat out of boredom after 30 years in politics.

This is the great truth that the actions with riot police and crowds of police at the beginning of the fourth term reveal to us. And all those who naturally ask the question of why Edi Rama needs to instill fear, when he has unlimited power, have the answer in another question. But why did he need 83 terms?

There is nothing strange in all this because this is the natural course of regimes. Just as the prestidigitators need to electrify the crowd, regimes also need the police and the police. Of course, also for the empty promises of Mrs. Marta Kos.
