The genitalists of diplomacy

The genitalists of diplomacy
Edi Rama at the Peace Board in Washington

If nothing changes in The Hague, then the historic speech will remain simply a balloon that burst in Washington to be heard in Tirana.

The meeting in Washington and the speech given by Prime Minister Edi Rama are being hailed as a strong diplomatic moment. Up to this point, as is normal, politics is also fueled by symbolism.

However, custom-made exaggerations are not helpful for cold judgment.

A diligent analyst, whose name begins with B., in a state of ecstasy, informed us that Rama in the US "took off his panties and showed his balls" (!) Literal quote.

When the "analysis" descends so low to these pelvic levels, we realize that the argument has remained paralyzed somewhere high up in the head.

Let's put politics back in a suit and put the analysis in the fridge to cool down the euphoria a bit. Let's look at the results, not the anatomy, even figuratively.

Participation in this Board so far resembles more of a plastic surgery for the Prime Minister's image, at a time when the government is swimming in the murky waters of scandals and SPAK investigations.

This international "oxygen" comes as a lifesaver and can truly serve as a kind of "political asylum" within the office, perhaps changing the personal fate of someone who has an open score with the justice system.

But the "terrestrial" question remains just as stubborn: Albanian citizens, what do they gain?

If this new brilliance on the side of the Trump administration is so real, wouldn't the first sign of dignity be removing Albania from that "blacklist" of American visas, which was handed to us as a bill of shame just before the invitation to Washington?

This would be a measurable result, a real triumph that would be worth thousands of Albanians, not just a silent amnesty for the government's tarnished image.

There is no doubt that raising the issue of the KLA and the ordeal of The Hague remains a legitimate, even vital, topic.

But unfortunately, the equations of international justice and the balance of power are not resolved with flashbulbs and open microphones. They are operations that are carried out in clinical silence, in closed corridors and behind the scenes where words have weight, not decibels. Only after the work is done there, do speeches emerge as decorations of success.

To do the opposite, to shout on the podium without having anything in your pocket, is more than naive. At these levels, when noise precedes the result, you may unwittingly do more harm than good. This is especially true for countries like ours without other pressure mechanisms.

I understand the fever for applause, I understand the impatience to dazzle that kind of audience that expects miracles from the stage. But this is exactly where the statesman is separated from the actor. There are moments when the strong stage light on such delicate issues does not help to see things better.

However, let's agree with the genitalists of diplomacy that speaking out loud and slamming the KLA trial in the face of this and that is unprecedented, unheard of, etc., etc.

So, let's see Prime Minister Rama's speech as a test. A practical test for the newly created Board itself and the real weight of its influence. Let's put aside the disputes and costs and accept the more optimistic hypothesis, that the right thing was done by accepting this invitation.

Very good. Now, after the speech, we have the ideal opportunity for measurement. With effects, with results, not with photos, not with video bombs, not with the necks and bulging pockets of propaganda aesthetes.

If this Board and its rapprochement with the Trump administration have real weight for Albanians, then let the issue of the trial of the KLA four become the first visible proof of influence.

Currently we have a strong statement, a big stage and an implicit expectation of influence. The Hague decision is coming very soon. Will anything really move? Will the decision-making power there react? If so, we have an instrument of influence in favor of Albanian interests. This is excellent news.

But if nothing changes in The Hague, then the historic speech will remain just a balloon that burst in Washington to be heard in Tirana. The accused will remain there, alone in the cell facing injustice, away from the stage lights that we love so much.

In this case, the epic makers, who today turn every movement into mythical heroism, tomorrow must give an account based on the real result. Since today they shout about strength and success, tomorrow they must explain to us why this "strength" is worthless.

The effect is measured by the consequences, not by the amplitude of the voice or the microphone. Much less by the size of the "boles" that analyst B claims to know well.
