The ILD press office has decided to give us some heartwarming news, Artur Metani has continued his "heroic" tour of Texas and Florida. The culmination of this institutional saga? The raising of the flag at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, a grand one-day ceremony that has surely made Albanian justice feel more at ease... from afar.
The flag was raised, waved, lowered and then personally delivered to Mr. Metani. A precious souvenir, perhaps to be placed in the office, as a reminder that somewhere in the world things work. Meanwhile, in Albania, justice continues its absurd spectacle, criminal trials that celebrate 20-year anniversaries, decisions that drag on longer than Tirana's traffic and a corruption that never tires.
But don't worry, the priorities are clear. In 7 years, Artur Metani has left an indelible mark, demanded the dismissal of Enkeleda Hoxha and reduced the salary of Pajtime Fetahu, a member of three criminal gangs in Elbasan, by 20%. A balance sheet that, if you look at it with the right eye, is almost epic, especially when compared to the thousands of complaints waiting in the drawer.
The Minister of Justice, Besford Lamallari, himself admits that the institution has only handled 2% of complaints. A figure that in any other country would be a scandal, but here it seems to be simply an annoying statistic that should not spoil the mood of official trips.
Does the United States of America know about these "achievements" of Artur Metani, or does it only know about the flag ceremony in Austin? Because beyond the photos and the protocol, stories with ironic notes hardly reach there, and even more so the claims of favoritism through the lack of inspections of magistrates; likewise, they are hardly aware of the processes that last for decades, the complaints that gather dust in a drawer and a justice system that produces more justifications than results, a balance sheet that does not wave in the capitols, but weighs down on citizens every day.
In the end, there is only one hope left, that next time, along with the flag from Texas, Artur Metani will bring some idea of how justice works. Because at the moment, it seems that we have more ceremonies than decisions, more journeys than results, and a system that runs... only on propaganda paper.
