For this reason, we need a new approach to fight systemic corruption, this endemic corruption that is eroding every cell of government. We need a new way, a new approach starting from basic laws to more specific ones.
Not a day goes by without reading or hearing about arrests and accusations of corruption. This situation is so excessive that it seems as if we are in a "Sodom" of corruption. It is understood that the main arrows are rightly on the third term of Rama, but when you remember the performance of his predecessors, added to the problems of numerous administrations until today, you understand that corruption is deeply rooted. And, when you know how the legislature works, the people who represent the Albanians there, the obstacles that the media authorities put out for the data, you understand that the fight against corruption will remain difficult. Young people who come with idealism, often 'like' this kind of life. Many of the names are completely unknown, but catapulted frighteningly…
However, Albania has marked a slight improvement in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2023, referring to the latest report of Transparency International. Our country is now rated with 37 points from 36 points a year ago, ranking 98th among 180 countries. It is one of the few moments that we leave Serbia behind, when it comes to indications, which already has only 36 points left and tightens the 104th place. Montenegro is the leader in the region because it is in the 63rd place (46 points) and North Macedonia in 76th place (42 points), even both places improved from a year ago, while Kosovo remained in the country (in 83rd place with 41 points), but significantly ahead of Albania.
What impresses you is that despite these accusations, no report is filed at all? Young people and different social groups are not impressed at all. How is it possible that the structure of the whistleblowers, which should have brought out the problems in the institutions, does not work? How is it possible that the opposition makes noise and did not delve into the story of corruption schemes? Why is it that there is no fear of audits? Why is this happening with properties, the cadastre? Why is there no fear and how is evil justified?“ For this reason, we need a new approach to fight systemic corruption, this endemic corruption that is eroding every cell of government. We need a new way, a new approach starting from basic laws to more specific ones. To start from the fields of procurement, taxes, concessions, property and cadastre, with all those sectors that provide services, and at the center of this struggle, the parliament should be placed. I have no faith that those who go to SPAK every day can fight corruption", MP Tabaku wrote in a statement.
But if there is "good" or "consoling" news, it is that even the most advanced democratic countries are not doing well with corruption. Despite being in a much better position than us, some top-ranking democracies, such as Sweden (82), the Netherlands (79), Iceland (72) and the United Kingdom (71), identify with their lowest scores. ever in the CPI since this report was published.
In short, corruption is everywhere, but in the Albanian case it is such that you are afraid of the anonymous people who are catapulted with the frightening wealth and which grow daily and hourly in front of our eyes and which we find so difficult to stop, when the mechanisms of our state are not enough to stop them. How is everything good wasted in this country? Where is the idealism left? Why does society not have mechanisms to stop this nightmare?
In a more social approach, Montesquieu used to convey this to the older ages. "It is not the youth who degenerate; they do not become corrupt until they see those of mature age who are already immersed in corruption", he once said.
