Crucifixion of businessmen as a service to corrupt public officials

Edi Rama once said that the system is to blame. And he was right. The system that he and his majority have built is like a pond, which makes everyone dirty. Business, media, civil society, intellectuals, everyone...

The explosion of the serious corruption scandal 5D unleashed once again the public crusade against businesses. The print media flooded with news denouncing businessmen who had won tenders in cooperation with the 5D company. In the evening television studios, the narrative was elaborated that a large part of the complicity in this corruption was precisely the businessmen, who not only had not denounced the 5D company, but had become party to the corruption with it.

In fact, business has long been the easiest prey for public blackmail. For the media this is a sport with great benefits, while for corrupt officials an invaluable service.

First, it is not true that businesses have not talked about the 5D file as it tries to propagate to the public. The denunciation of this file came precisely from business and the opposition knows this well. Even senior officials of the municipality, including its mayor Erion Veliaj, were openly told by businessmen that 5D is a company of the municipality.

Mr. Veliaj himself admitted it the day before, when he publicly affirmed that he had heard words, but added that he could not believe every rumor that is being said in Tirana. This is the truth of the Mayor. But there is another truth.

One of the businessmen who denounced the 5D company long before it was publicly denounced, since that moment he no longer wins any contracts in the capital's municipality. In fact, the businessman in question was refused the signing of the contract for a tender, which he won with 3 decisions of the Public Procurement Commission. This is an unprecedented case in the history of the Albanian state.

Edi Rama once said that the system is to blame. And he was right. The system that he and his majority have built is like a pond, which makes everyone dirty. Business, media, civil society, intellectuals, everyone...

It is easy to crucify businessmen. Even very profitable. But the 5D file is not a conspiracy of a group of businessmen against citizens and the public interest. It is simply the corruption of some officials, who turned the public mandate into a private enterprise. This is the simple truth.

The swamp that makes everything dirty is only polluted by one source. He is the corruption generated by state offices. All others are victims. Including the businessmen, who in the corrupt jungle are reluctantly faced with two mandatory solutions. Survive in the polluted pond or send their employees home and take on the kurt. This is the system that the prime minister used to complain about.
