French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that France opposes the imposition of tariffs by Oman and Iran on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that such a move would set a dangerous precedent for other strategic sea lanes in the world.
In an interview with the TF1 television network, Macron said that imposing these tariffs would increase maritime transport costs and, consequently, prices on international markets. He stressed that such a practice contradicts the principles of international law and the rules that guarantee freedom of navigation.
The French president also touched on the issue of so-called "service fees," which he said were added at the last moment of the agreement. However, he stressed that the main priority remains the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of normal navigation in the area.
"The priority is for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened, for ships and tankers to be able to sail, and for the crews who have been stranded for months to be released," Macron said.
Speaking about the agreement between the United States and Iran, the head of the Elysee announced that the document has already been signed electronically. He added that the relevant annexes are expected to be signed on Friday, stressing the importance of implementing the agreement as soon as possible.
"Everything must be done in the coming hours and days to make this agreement a reality," the French president declared.
