Everyone reacted to the event, the Director of Police, the Director of National Emergency, the Head of the Justice Inspectorate and finally the Prime Minister himself. We are talking about an actual crime. And where did he see..., in a quiet town like Pogradec. But crime also happens in quiet cities with restrained people. And the crime, - where we are talking about the loss of a human life, - cannot be minimized in any case. Because that would be fatal. But the media said that the event was tried to be kept secret. Or at least to get out of the real context of the event itself, trying to return to banality. And the media did its job. He brought the incident out of the closet to make the actors accountable.
Therefore, the Director of Police also reacted. Therefore, the Prime Minister himself reacted.
We are in a period when the media in Albania has great difficulties. The printed press is shrinking day by day and many newspapers have closed down. In this way, a part of the free voice has escaped. There are televisions left. But the fight for justice is not done alone. While the biggest confrontation is with the fake news of anonymous portals that throw bile here and there and no one needs to hide behind them. In this way, we have started to turn our eyes again to serious and not at all propaganda media. Because each of us wants to know something real and not manipulative.
But the truth is the hardest thing to come to light. Because many want to keep it in the dark.
The case of Denis Mece and Egli Proga from Pogradeci, in the hot days of August 2024, is a clear example of how the media can serve as the voice of the collective conscience in a society where tragic events tend to be covered in silence. In a country like Albania, where such cases are numerous, the media have played and continue to play a key role in clarifying the truth and highlighting injustices that are often hidden behind the closed doors of institutions.
It is not easy to face the prosecutor of the case, nor the lawyer who is paid to raise as much dust as possible in the absence of darkness. But a journalist can face them and put him in the dock.
A person involved in a macabre event could have quietly disappeared. Such events, with a serious criminal character, are often attempted to be covered up to preserve the image of state bodies or to avoid public disturbances. This tragic event could have ended up in the archive of oblivion, but the Albanian media, with its courage, decided not to allow this.

Si në shumë raste të tjera, mediat ngritën alarmin, duke e sjellë këtë çështje në qendër të vëmendjes së publikut. Ajo që filloi si një raportim i thjeshtë për një vrasje, u kthye në një lëvizje për drejtësi, duke hedhur dritë mbi hapat e ndërlikuar të një sistemi që shpesh ka tendencë të mbulojë të vërtetat e hidhura. Gazetarët e guximshëm që zgjodhën të raportojnë për këtë ngjarje, jo vetëm që zbuluan faktet dhe ndodhitë që çuan në vrasjen e një babai me dy fëmijë të vegjël, por gjithashtu ekspozuan të gjitha përpjekjet e heshtura për ta mbuluar atë.
Kur flitet për fuqinë e medias në shoqërinë moderne, shpesh nënvlerësohet roli i saj si një prej faktorëve kryesorë që mund të tronditë strukturat e fuqisë dhe të drejtojë gjithë shtetin në një rrugë të re. Rastet kur media ngrihet si një korb i zi mbi një tragjedi njerëzore, si një vrasje që tenton të mbulohet nga organet shtetërore, janë ndër episodet më dramatike të shoqërive tona, duke demonstruar jo vetëm pushtetin, por edhe moralin e saj.
Një vrasje në vetvete është një ngjarje e errët, që zakonisht i ngjitet nënvetëdijes kolektive si një njollë e pashlyeshme. Por kur media e zbërthen këtë ngjarje, duke e zhveshur nga shtresat e misterit dhe komplotit të heshtur, ajo shndërrohet në një katalizator të një revolucioni të heshtur brenda sistemit shtetëror. Organet shtetërore, në përpjekjen e tyre për të mbuluar një krim, shpesh janë të mbështjella në rrjetën e interesave të ngushta, të lidhura me pushtetin, paratë dhe influencën politike. Ky është çasti kur media hyn në lojë, e nxitur nga një ndjenjë e drejtësisë publike ose, në disa raste, nga dëshira për të kapur vëmendjen e opinionit të gjerë.
Imagjinoni një skenar ku një vrasje e thjeshtë, e kryer në hijen e një nate të zezë, përfshin jo vetëm një jetë të humbur, por edhe një zinxhir të tërë ndërlikimesh që mund të çojnë drejt korrupsionit në nivelet më të larta. Në këtë moment, organet shtetërore fillojnë të lëvizin si aktorë në një dramë të mirëorkestruar, ku çdo veprim i tyre synon të fshehë të vërtetën. Dokumentet zhduken, dëshmitarët heshtin, dhe ndoshta vetë dosja e hetimit shndërrohet në një fantazmë që nuk ekziston më në arkivat e drejtësisë.
Kemi boll raste të tilla.
Por ajo që organet e pushtetit ekzekutiv apo gjyqësor i llogarisin gjithmonë jo mirë është forca e investigative e pushtetit të katër. Një gazetar kurajoz, i cili nuk i trembet pasojave, mund të marrë rolin e protagonistit në këtë histori të vërtetë. Dhe gazetarë të tillë ka pasur e do të ketë gjithmonë. Ai zbërthen sekrete, nxjerr në dritë detaje që përpihen nga errësira, dhe më e rëndësishmja, mobilizon publikun. Kur media kthen një vrasje të mbuluar në një çështje të drejtësisë publike, shteti ndodhet përballë një presioni të papërballueshëm. Heshtja e tij, që një herë e një kohë mund të kishte qetësuar turmat, tani shndërrohet në një ulërimë që kërkon drejtësi.
At this point, all the actors involved in covering the crime feel the heat of the spotlight. Officials begin to worry, politicians seek distance from the scandal, and justice becomes more a matter of survival than following the law. The entire state structure begins to move, not to solve the crime, but to protect itself from the media and public opinion. Ironically, attempts to cover up the murder become the main cause of its unraveling.
Ultimately, this is a clear example of a bitter reality: in a society where the state tends to control the narrative, the media can be the voice that breaks this control, acting as a single but invincible force, in search of truth. And when the media sets the whole country in motion, nothing is certain—except that justice will demand its place, no matter who tries to stop it.
In a country where many criminal cases can have a similar end, the Albanian media has shown time and time again that it is ready to stand on the side of justice. Faced with the great pressures of a system that may not always be clean, the media plays its role as the defender of the truth. This case, like many others before it, serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping alive a free and courageous media that acts as a guardian of human rights and an unyielding voice against injustices that tend to be silenced. .
Albania has many such cases, where the media has played a decisive role in clarifying the truth and serving the public. And it will continue to play this role, as long as there are journalists who dare to break the silence and bring to light the truths that someone else would like to remain hidden.
