How much concern does this problem pose to the country's population?
According to the latest survey I conducted for UNDP, 71.6% of respondents live in neighborhoods/villages where illegal possession of weapons is not a problem (see table below). From a rough statistical extrapolation, it turns out that about 1.47 million adult residents live in such neighborhoods/villages.
A full 62.6% of respondents have a positive assessment of the State Police's fight against illegal possession of weapons; 50.2% are positive and 12.4% are biased towards the positive (see table below). From a rough statistical extrapolation, it results that about 1.28 million adult residents in total have a positive assessment.
Even a single unlicensed weapon can cause death or serious injury, but the results of the above survey show that a positive opinion prevails among the population regarding this issue.
In fact, this year we have only had 11.5 non-family homicides per million inhabitants, compared to 41.2 homicides per million inhabitants a decade and a half ago. Compared to the European Union, we are close in this indicator (the EU had 9.7 homicides per million inhabitants last year). Meanwhile, our neighbor, Montenegro, is much worse than us in this indicator (Montenegro had 32.3 homicides per million inhabitants last year).
