The launch of the debate on the names of candidates for mayor of Tirana, where three names from outside the Democratic Party were mentioned today, has had a positive impact on public opinion.
Whether as a result of the reputation of the names mentioned: Edlira Çepani, Ermal Hasimja and Florjan Hackaj, or even for the opposition finally awakening to politics.
The discussion and debate about the candidate is purely a policy, which is a matter for every political force. How real is this discussion and whether the proposals that emerge from the debates will be taken into account by the leadership of the DP, namely Berisha, is another matter. However, it is a matter like that famous joke from the movie: there is as much as you want for today and tomorrow. In addition to Tirana, the opposition needs to find 5 other candidates.
However, the "smile" of opposition supporters has been frozen on their lips by Gazment Bardhi, as well as other opposition exponents, who have launched a vicious attack on President Bajram Begaj.
A political war that seems to be waged with the intention of dampening the enthusiasm that was brought about for a few hours by the emergence of names that did not come from the “Tower of Bari.” And this is clearly a machination that enters the workshop of the great master.
The fight against Bajram Begaj is just a battery in the air with tracer bullets to make noise and leave a mark, but not a hit on the target.
The head of state is not at all a political target of the opposition, as Erion Veliaj normally was not, due to the manner and form in which he was attacked after losing the 2023 elections.
We are dealing with absurd logic, since in the end, President Begaj decreed according to the vote that the DP advisors also gave for Erion Veliaj.
If the DP had maintained a clear political stance on Veliaj in the municipal council, rather than adhering to the majority's request, it had every right to deal with Begaj.
For whose decree, there is a debate among lawyers and constitutionalists, which will continue with full legitimacy. What the DP can do, beyond Bardhi's insults and Gjekmarkaj's declamations, is to send the decree of the head of state to the Constitutional Court.
The DP has all the legal attributes, as well as the professional opportunities, to take this step that is not simply logical, but also a real way of doing politics, such as the politics of debate over candidate names.
The appearance of the trio of three intellectuals created the impression that we were in a "late awakening" of the opposition after a shock that came from Edi Rama's bombshell on September 11th.
