A protest against the popular will

A protest against the popular will

It is precisely for this reason that Berishism today rejects its electoral defeat and not Rama's victory.

The May 16 protest organized by Berishe in defense of free voting was not against the Rama government or the socialist government. Despite the many accusations made at that rally, which you don't need to hear to know, the protest neither weakens nor shakes Rama's government.

It did not harm the success of the European summit in Tirana. The fact that an opposition force protests freely and peacefully is positive PR for Albanian democracy, where everyone is free to say whatever they want and gather whoever they want and wherever they want.

Denouncing election fraud by an opposition that has lost by a quarter of a million votes in a country of about two and a half million inhabitants can hardly be taken seriously as evidence of a dictatorship. Therefore, the protest proves the existence of political freedom more than the theft or manipulation of the vote.

In this respect, the protest did a great service to the Rilinda propaganda and its European summit. It is the next service that Berishism does to Rama, portraying his government as a democracy that tolerates and respects the opposition, in proportion to the nonsense it articulates.

The Berishism protest had nothing to do with the opposition's free vote, for at least two reasons. First, the denunciations of the use of the administration, of crime, or of vote buying do not explain the loss of a quarter of a million votes. Otherwise, how is it explained that the opposition received more votes yesterday, when the use of the administration, of vote buying, and of crime was much more present than today?

Secondly, the main source of the deformation of the popular will in the last elections was not crime or vote buying but the electoral system. The major manipulation was the penalization of small parties with about 10 seats in parliament. This produced the parliamentary swelling of the SP, with almost 10 mandates, leading to a formidable majority of 83 mandates.

It is a system that transfers the protest vote against the PS-PD bipolarity to the ruling party. It is much more effective than gangs, crime or vote buying. Imagine how many gangs, crime and vote buying are needed to secure 10 seats in the Assembly.

And yet, in the multitude of accusations of Berishism, there was not a single denunciation of our electoral system that openly distorts the popular will. This is due to the simple fact that the protest was not in defense of the popular will. On the contrary, it was a public rejection of the electoral verdict that was expressed quite clearly in the elections.

No election, with the exception of 1992, has produced a clearer verdict than that of the May 11, 2025 elections. The electorate gave a passing grade to the Rama government and a failing grade to the Berisha opposition. And the opposition's failing grade was much clearer than the government's passing grade, for the simple fact that the electoral decline of the DP coalition was much greater than the electoral increase of the SP.

It is precisely against this verdict that Berishism is protesting today, rejecting the negative rating given to it by the Albanian electorate. It is not a rejection of Rama's victory because it was expected. No one, on the left or on the right, had illusions of an electoral victory for Berishism. The electoral bet of this political project was to maintain, strengthen or increase the opposition vote, not to come to power.

It is precisely for this reason that Berishism today rejects its electoral defeat and not Rama's victory. Berishism today does not accept the fact that it fell by a quarter of a million votes compared to the previous elections and for this it points the finger, as always, at Edi Rama.

But the suppression of the opposition vote has nothing to do with Rama's gangs, administration, or fines. All of these are tools that Rama uses to preserve the socialist vote, but they are worth little or nothing in getting rid of a quarter of a million opposition votes.

This is also clear to the Berisha supporters who have already begun their attack on the Albanian people. They accuse them of being manipulated, subjugated, bought, sold, without political morality and without democratic culture, because they reject the political morality, freedom and democracy offered by the Berisha-Meta duo, together with Flamur Noka.

Therefore, Berishism today is not in opposition to Rama or the Socialist Party. On the contrary, it has long been the political and electoral crutch that consolidates this power, among other things by arguing that it is invincible.

Berishizm is today in opposition to the verdict of the electorate. It remains to be seen how it will win the next elections, in 2029, now that it has declared denouncing the popular will as an electoral strategy.
