From arithmetic to politics

From arithmetic to politics

This paradoxical result is a clear injustice.

In a democracy, figures (the amount of votes) are not just numbers, but translate into political influence and are always read through the filter of political interests.

In the Tirana district, the Democratic Party received a total of 151,157 votes. Of these, 19,025 votes went to Jorida Tabaku, which means that 1 in every 8 DP voters chose to vote nominally for her. On the other hand, Ilir Alimehmeti received 16,595 votes, which translates to 1 in every 9 voters, and yet, he remained outside the parliament.

This paradoxical result is also a clear injustice. It shows that the closed-list system does not fully reflect the political reality and preferences of the electorate.

Without a change in attitude towards the selection and listing of candidates, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for the opposition to move out of the political parking lot in which it finds itself today.

This also applies to the closest elections on the calendar.
