All those who study journalism, when they leave that faculty, probably don't remember much, but one thing remains imprinted in their heads - that media reporting is based on the famous five W's which are WHO (who), WHAT (what ), WHEN (when), WHER (where) and WHY (why). While a communication model that also relies on the 5 Ws is that of Laswell, which aims to show what is included in the general communication system, and in this case the 5 Ws are WHO (who in the sense of the author of the instance media), WHAT (what in terms of the content of communication) In WHAT channel (in what form of communication), (WHOM) to whom, i.e. the public in this case and (WITH WHAT effect) the impact on the public.
I was reminded of all this when I read these days about the incident in an old people's home which, from all the media, was reported to be somewhere near "Ali Dem". A LIE. That nursing home is located next to my building on "Ali Visha" street, below the "Student" City and next to another nursing home located a few meters above it. It is a beautiful villa that used to be known as "Kinderhausse" because there was a kindergarten set up by a German foundation, and the other old people's home was until recently called "Joshua" home because it was originally built with the help of a Jewish foundation. .
And why did all the media, without exception, place this nursing home somewhere near "Ali Demi"? It is difficult to say, but from this small detail you understand the total amnesia, irresponsibility and lack of correctness in media reporting. This small flaw also highlights a general disease that our public narrative has. In general, not only journalists, but especially those who speak in public and politicians in particular, have made it a law to speak without reference, never to show what happens, but to show their parallel world or what they have in head.
This general disease that has created the false narrative that shows Albania or the Albanians as seen by the blind eyes of politicians (especially those of the opposition), has infected the general discourse and removed responsibility. In Albania, it is not shown what happens, but the experience of political people on what happened is shown. Of course, experience or effect is one side of communication. The main thing is to learn what happened.
Now imagine, when, for such a banal event, for a place located near the "Osman Myderrizi" school, below the buildings of the Student City, on the oldest street in Tirana and only 10 minutes from the Artistic High School, the media say that the place is close to "Ali Demit", then think about how the report will be in the future. The lack of attention, the defects of the school that the result of Pisa reminds us every year, a society built from morning to dinner with the speeches of madmen in front of the Municipality of Tirana, it is not surprising that it also infects the journalists who report in this terrible heat August.
They too think with templates and clichés. It is known that in Tirana there is an old people's home in the neighborhood "Ali Demi" and that is enough. If we were a normal country, this case would serve us to better see one of the sharpest problems that our society has started to have, which is the third age. The nursing homes that are being built and will be built mostly in the future should be carefully monitored and should be helped because Albania, like other European countries, has an ever-increasing population of what is called the third age, who in most cases they are alone, due to immigration, they have diseases that need special treatments.
This category, and especially those who commit criminal crimes due to mental illness, are also a challenge for all of us. However, how can we talk about them when even in a tragic case like this one these days, the media does not know where that place is and makes the case spectacular with the stories of the aggressor and not with the tragedy of this problem.
