Thus, the police arrest people for carrying weapons without a permit, but they are released within three days by lenient court prosecutors - some under house arrest and most only with a mandatory appearance.
Unlike August, the January-July period marked the lowest record of deaths from crimes and road accidents in Albania. These deaths decreased by 16% during the first 7 months of this year, compared to the same period a year ago. And this reduction was in the wake of drastic reductions in road and crime deaths over the past decade. Thus, deaths from crime and road accidents for every 1,000 deaths from all causes fell to 8.7 at the end of July, compared to 20.7 in 2013 (see chart below).

Compared to the European Union, we came very close in terms of crime and road accident mortality, while being 46% lower than our similar neighbour, Montenegro (see graph below).

But the month of August seems to be breaking this downward trend in deaths from crime and road accidents. And the many deaths in August from both causes have also highlighted a very disturbing phenomenon - the lack of coordination between the police and prosecutors' offices and district courts in the fight against crime and serious violators of the Traffic Code.
Thus, the police arrest people for carrying weapons without a permit, but they are released within three days by lenient court prosecutors - some under house arrest and most only with a mandatory appearance. Traffic police arrest drunk or crazy drivers who endanger the lives of citizens with their vehicles like rockets, but they are released within three days by lenient court prosecutors - some with house arrest and most only with an obligation to appear.
And then these released by prosecutors and district courts become protagonists for death in the streets and neighborhoods of Albania!
Not to mention the scandalous cases when prosecutors and district courts mitigate the criminal charges referred by the State Police, giving the message to future criminals that they will not have serious consequences for the crimes they may commit.
The security of citizens' lives from crime and road accidents must rest on two strong legs that walk in tune with each other - the police and justice!
