The inability of the Democratic Party to resolve this crisis, to resolve this issue, pushed the Democratic Party into a near-civil war.
The Democratic Party has more or less completely built the coalition with which it will enter the elections, has outlined the narrative it will follow in the election campaign, and has unveiled the team it will present to Albanians as the team that, according to it, will be the government of tomorrow.
When a party or political group is in opposition, they try during their time in opposition to transform themselves into a political project so that when the time comes for elections, they can represent change. If a party or political group that is in opposition fails to be perceived by the public as change, they will never win the elections unless some unimaginable catastrophe or mess happens in the government camp.
Usually, the way a group or a party starts the opposition, its behavior and attitudes at the beginning of the opposition, that is, at the beginning of its opposition mandate after losing the elections, will define its entire oppositionism during the years of opposition. This start will also determine the way it will appear as an alternative to the incumbent in the elections.
The Democratic Party in 2021 faced a deep crisis after losing the elections. This crisis had to do with the declaration of its former chairman Sali Berisha as persona non grata by the USA. The inability of the Democratic Party to resolve this crisis, to resolve this issue, pushed the Democratic Party into an almost civil war. After the civil war, the Democratic Party returned under the leadership of former Prime Minister Berisha. Throughout the 'civil war', Sali Berisha and his followers built the narrative of the conspiracy of Rama, the US administration, and George Soros against Sali Berisha and the Democratic Party. According to them, a deep and well-organized international conspiracy had been made against them, in which the US Secretary of State and some of the most powerful people in the US administration were involved to serve Prime Minister Rama. Sali Berisha and the DP would break this conspiracy, destroy its purpose, and become stronger and more democratic.
This departure of the opposition after 2021, this almost four-year journey so far, defined what it is today, defined what it represents today, defined the nature of the DP, its narrative, its coalitions, and its team in these elections.
This departure, this journey undoubtedly required radical theses, radical positions, it required a great enemy and a conspiracy. This departure, this journey required loyal people, unquestioning followers of the language and positions of Sali Berisha. This departure and this journey required strong ranks, the unity of everyone who over the years had linked the DP with Berisha and Berisha with the DP, making them one and the same.
That's how it happened. All of this would inevitably lead to this opposition today, to this coalition, to this narrative, and to this team.
The coalition does not have any new party within itself that opposes Prime Minister Rama and the corrupt system he has established, but also all of Albanian politics in 34 years. The coalition does not include Agron Shehaj, Adratik Lapaj, Endri Shabani, Lulzim Basha, Dash Shehi, Arlind Qorri, or anyone who attacks the entire corrupt political system that today has Edi Rama at its head. This is a forced coalition, it could not be otherwise. If the DP were to enter a coalition with Lapaj or Shehaj or Basha or Shabani, it would have to reverse the four-year start and path. It cannot do that. The coalition will include anyone who has had a role and weight in the 34-year system and does not want the system to collapse. The coalition would also include funny figures who received mandates when the DP withdrew from parliament.
The start and the four-year path would impose only one narrative. The narrative is that Rama's conspiracy and Soros's continues, he has seized the system and justice, has the prosecution in his hands and attacks and investigates the opposition and those Rama and the conspiracy love. The DP will free Albania from the international conspiracy and will make it great. The DP cannot say that it will "drain the swamp" that it will fight the system, that it will fight the establishment, that it will fight the clientelist relations of big business with politics.
Even the team, its political leaders will be people who carry this narrative, people who embody the spirit of the four-year path. There can be no new conservatives or right-wing liberals in it. There will only be people who use the language of enemies and conspiracies, people who have proven loyalty to this language, people who have been in power and in the leadership of the DP for years or even decades.
For this reason, the election victory is expected only from the collapse of the Rama government through the arrests of senior government officials and Lacivita (the American consultant). SPAK's arrests of senior socialist leaders have weakened Rama and the socialists, but the PD does not benefit electorally because the PD seeks to completely dissolve SPAK. Lacivita cannot do anything to the PD. He cannot change the four-year-old departure and path of the PD, departure and path that are the fundamental cause of its positions today. Lacivita cannot make the PD a party that represents change, that seeks the destruction of the 34-year-old corrupt system, the draining of the swamp, the fight against clientelism and the connection of business with politics. The PD itself sees Lacivita not as someone who will advise it on the campaign, on language and on positions, but as someone who will make it possible for the PD to associate with President Trump and then for this association to produce votes in favor of the PD. This is an imagination and that's all.
All this does not and cannot make the DP a party that represents change. All this puts the DP in a desperate campaign.
