The meta navigated the same waters of its multiple political challenges as usual, but of course the next surprise was when it added a tier 2 local bank to its attack menu.
Ilir Meta, former president of the republic and president of PL, appeared angry in a meeting with the leadership of his party. Meta spoke with his usual language to the opponents, using harsh words from the lower floors of the Albanian vocabulary to his targets, Rama, Duman or some of the former characters of his party.
The meta navigated the same waters of its multiple political challenges as usual, but of course the next surprise was when it added a tier 2 local bank to its attack menu.
"I can bankrupt him in 24 hours like Sudan!", threatened Meta. The former president said that such a thing could be done by calling on Albanians to withdraw their deposits from the bank that had angered him. A scene that early lovers of literature have read in a very popular book during the dictatorship, The Bankier by Leslie Waller, when none of the citizens understood anything about the financial system and the "banks" in Tirana were simply primitive money warehouses, a first-hand contribution to the general public's approach to banking and the financial system.
In Tirana, such a "rampant" of panic has happened only once, in the distant year 2002, when citizens flocked to the counters to withdraw their savings for fear of losing them. And it was a very difficult undertaking to stop the psychology of the crowd that was still fresh from the massacre of the pyramids of 97. Anyone with a basic knowledge of finance easily understands that such an act would be a chain reaction, would create a domino system that did not know how it would end. But in all cases the consequences would be between bad ones, at best and terribly bad.
Fortunately, Meta did not go beyond the threat, even though he repeated his anger in another local meeting with militants of his party.
Basically, the quarrel with the bank bordered on banality: a financial service for PL had been refused. A dispute that had only been resolved with a few minutes of Meta's phone call with the bank manager and a mutual exchange of respect carried over from the past.
In all likelihood, a man who knows how the state works, was not serious when he threatened a bank in Tirana with the fate of Sudes. In all likelihood, Meta wanted to show strength, but not to use the strength in a completely disproportionate way to give in return to the vengeful flea, the burning of the whole house with all the wardrobe inside.
This grim episode of the ease of crossing a few red lines that a society has, has become a popular sport in the country for some time. Even though they are not nunneries, even though in their activity second-level banks, including the Central Bank if needed, have different problems in their management, they have a completely different status compared to any other institution. Everywhere else, except in the banking system, "games", shopping, attacks and rumors can be allowed.
Any other institution or individual has a much higher degree of tolerance for encountering untruths, attacks for dubious interests, hidden rivalries and everything else. Banks and the financial system in general, have a special nature, where everyone has to believe that lighting a fire inside the boat, burning its sails for sport, drowns not only the boat, but also the sailors inside.
Even Mr. Berisha raises his tongue when he talks about special banks. Other politicians, many of them totally profane in matters of finance - among them those who weigh money in kilograms and not in pieces - approach the same archaic and anarchic approach when talking about the same topic.
Of course, the modest adobe of the Albanian world does not collapse from the little games that are played in the daily absurd theater of politics, where the nails needed for horseshoes are usually used to poke out the horse's eyes. Today, few remember that prosecutor who became a popular hero for arresting the governor of the state bank. No one thought that the scene of the arrest was not a black chronicle and that in a democracy that preaches equality between citizens, citizens are not always equal in rights, immunity and duties. Not because of the name of the individual, but because of the office that the individual aims to hold. The unbearable ease of playing with fire is actually the fire that can burn anyone.
Few can understand such a thing better than Meta, Berisha and a few others who have governed this country. As Rama is forced to understand due to the weight of the task. The three of them together, forcing others behind them, for different reasons, but for the same purpose, should be firefighters of the criminal fires that are slowly and persistently opening in Tirana, both stupidity and greed, even God forbid, other evil intentions that surpass both stupidity and greed.
