To be a friend or enemy of the people?

The strongest man in the world is the one who stands alone...

If Henrik Ibsen had known the reality of Albania, he would not have had to change a single line from his play "An Enemy of the People", written in 1883. This work remains one of the most powerful literary manifestations of the clash between individual truth and collective hypocrisy, between civic honesty and the corruption of the system by vested interests.

At the center of the story is Dr. Stockman, an honest and dedicated doctor, who discovers that the water in the city's public baths is contaminated and poses a health risk. When he tries to make the truth public, he faces a wall of hostility not only from the local government, but also from the media, citizens and even his own family. He is declared an "enemy of the people" simply for daring to tell the truth.

The similarity to our society is incredible, where often those who denounce injustice or corruption are considered divisive, enemies or saboteurs of the “national interest”. The well-known expression “Voice of the People”, the name of the newspaper in the drama, is sarcastically similar to the way some Albanian media outlets today mask the narrow interests of powerful groups by proclaiming themselves to be representatives of public opinion.

Ibsen prophetically shows us how the majority, if guided by fear, interest, or manipulation, can exclude, persecute, and insult the individual who represents critical thought and the voice of reason. And this happens even when the latter's goal is only to protect the common good.

When Dr. Stockman says that "the strongest man in the world is the one who stands the most alone," he puts his finger on a serious social wound: the lack of courage to stand on the right side when it becomes unpopular with the majority.

This drama is a strong call for young Albanians to learn that justice and truth are not measured by numbers, but by conscience. It has extraordinary educational value in developing critical thinking and understanding the role that literature can play in civic formation.
