Trump gives Iran a "nuclear bomb"
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio calls Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz an "economic atomic bomb". But this is not Washington's only own goal...

The US Secretary of State has correctly identified the problem: The Strait of Hormuz has become an "economic atomic weapon" that the Iranian regime is using against the world. Not the strait itself, of course, but the blockade that Iran has imposed on this maritime corridor of great importance to the global economy.

But who gave Tehran this weapon?

The answer is clear: the US government, on whose behalf Rubio speaks. In the past, Iran did not dare to close the strait, even though all parties knew that this possibility existed. Trump was reportedly aware of this. The regime used this tool only when it saw its survival at risk.

No one who thinks strategically and has empathy for the Iranian people will advocate the continuation of this regime. However, the fact that Trump now has to negotiate the reopening of a sea route that was free before the US-Israeli attack is a bitter toll in a war in which he has already declared himself victorious.

Even for Iran's real nuclear program, which could give Tehran an even more powerful weapon, Trump faces a problem of his own making.

The highly enriched uranium that Iran must now hand over would likely not exist at all if Trump had not torn up the nuclear deal during his first term.

For a world power, these are a lot of own goals. /Adapted from FAZ /
