He was with his wife and 12-year-old son when they discovered that someone had entered their home. Exile Lazri is in the prison of Albania awaiting extradition, while the Italian police have been looking for him since July 17, 2023, when the sentence was taken.

The police had arrested Mergim Lazri as the author of the serious accident that occurred on January 4, 2023, on the Bulqizë-Maqellare axis on the Arbri road, which killed 3 people while 4 others were injured. Among the injured was Mergim Lazri, the driver of a Mercedes Benz car with English license plates which collided that evening with a Mercedes Benz 240 vehicle. The brothers Kujtim and Murat Istrefi lost their lives in the accident, as well as the wife of one of the victims (Kujtim) Lulzime Istrefi , 46 years old, from Maqellara. "Lazri has never left. I was in contact with him immediately after the sentence and he was always at home ", explains the lawyer Antonio Genovese, who, quoted by the Italian media, adds: "Of course my client continues to repeat his innocence in the Mottura case "

The murder of the architect shocked the entire community of Piossasco, where the fifty-year-old lived. He had been sleeping on the first floor of his house with his wife and children the night he died. As soon as he heard the noise, he went outside, went downstairs and confronted the thieves. During the fight, Margjini shot him in the leg with a 22-caliber bullet, cutting his femoral artery. Mergim Lazri, according to the prosecution, stayed in the car in order to escape together with his accomplices.
