"ANSA": Albanian track is not a priority for the Italian police

Italy remains embroiled in a climate of tension and confusion over the assassination of investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, with two of the country's largest media outlets, Il Giornale and ANSA, reporting different versions of the direction of the investigation. At the center of this debate is the Albanian link, which was initially rumored as a possibility, but then seems to have been relegated to the background.

According to a report by Il Giornale, the arrest of Altin Sinomati, an Albanian citizen arrested on October 10 in Abu Dhabi and considered the mastermind behind the 2020 murder of Selavdi Shehaj in Torvaianica, is seen as a key element in unraveling a criminal network that may be linked to the assassination of Ranucci on October 16 near his home in Pomezia. Right-wing Italian media reported that Shehaj's murder took place just 100 meters from the journalist's apartment, in an area that, according to Ranucci himself, is controlled by Albanian organized crime factions and associates of figures such as Fabrizio Piscitelli, known as "Diabolik".

In contrast, the official Italian agency ANSA reported that the Albanian lead is no longer a priority in the investigation, describing it as a “suggestion” and not a concrete lead at this stage. Roman anti-mafia investigators are more focused on the possible links of the assassination with right-wing extremist groups and elements of ultras fans, as well as the numerous intimidations that Ranucci has reported since 2021. The Rome Prosecutor's Office alone has over 10 open investigative files for threats against him, all currently against unknown perpetrators.

Meanwhile, Italian authorities are also analyzing security cameras and the cars used in the attack. A Fiat 500 stolen in the Ostia area was found near Ranucci's house, while witnesses speak of a masked man who was seen shortly before the explosion. The investigation has taken on extensive dimensions and, as media reports, authorities are seeking to link previous episodes of threats to this attack.

Meanwhile, Ranucci himself has been clear in his public stance, linking the climate of fear to the exposure of organized crime on his show. "There are not many people who have the capacity to carry out such attacks," he declared in an interview for "Repubblica", where he also clearly mentioned the role of the Albanian mafia in Torvaianica and its links to the "Report" files. / Pamphlet
