A sentence of 10 years in prison has been requested against the 53-year-old from Saranda, Thanas Bako, who is suspected of being an underground criminal banker worth hundreds of millions of euros.
Bako admitted in court in Rotterdam on Thursday that he "did wrong things". He received messages and forwarded them. "I was the messenger, this was a big mistake. But apart from that, I don't know anything about it", he has emphasized several times. His lawyer previously strongly denied that he was an "underworld banker".
Bako was arrested in Athens on May 31 last year at the request of the Netherlands and has now been in a Dutch cell for over a year. He is said to have led a network of couriers in the Netherlands via crypto communications, which has moved almost a quarter of a billion euros in cash for criminals. This would have happened in the period between June 2020 and March 2021.
The network is said to have operated from various offices in the Netherlands, including Wateringen and Amsterdam. Members of the courier network were sentenced to years in prison earlier this year.
At the end of last year, Greece and the Public Prosecution considered the possibility of agreements for a possible sentence, but this was not possible.
