According to the ANSA agency, the new accusation is related to alleged discrepancies between service reports drawn up by officers and statements given by two neighbors, who are considered eyewitnesses to the event.
The number of carabinieri under investigation for the death of Elton Bani, the 41-year-old Albanian who lost his life on August 17 in Manesseno, near Genoa, after the use of an electric weapon (taser) by law enforcement officers has increased to four.
Initially, the two officers who used the taser were registered as suspects of involuntary manslaughter. According to Italian media, they have now been charged with forgery, which also includes two other carabinieri present during the incident.
The investigation is being coordinated by prosecutor Paola Calleri. According to the ANSA agency, the new charge is related to alleged discrepancies between the service reports drawn up by the officers and the statements given by two neighbors, who are considered eyewitnesses to the event.
In their reports, the carabinieri stated that the use of the stun gun was necessary after Bani had displayed aggressive behavior, punching and kicking them and being out of control.
However, according to the testimonies of the neighbors, the 41-year-old was not armed. They claim that at one point he refused to go up the stairs with the carabinieri to get his identification documents. According to the same version, Bani was grabbed by the railing, fell to the ground and then hit a second time with a taser while lying face down in the hallway.
According to witnesses, the intervention occurred while he had one hand under his stomach and the officers were trying to handcuff him.
The results of the forensic examination show that the last Taser strike is suspected to have caused cardiac arrest. According to experts, the presence of cocaine was found in the 41-year-old's body, a factor that is considered a contributing cause of death along with the use of the electric weapon.
At the preliminary hearing, the prosecution, the suspects' defense, and the legal representative of the victim's family will have the opportunity to question the two eyewitnesses. So far, the date of the hearing has not been set.
