The Durrës Court has ordered the security measure "prison arrest" for 44-year-old Rezart Abazaj, who over the weekend, while drunk, crashed his vehicle into a police car in an attempt to flee.
Defense attorney Vladimir Skënderi stated that the 44-year-old had committed the same criminal offense two months earlier, when he was ordered to appear in court. According to him, Abazaj admitted to the crime and expressed remorse during the hearing.
"There is reasonable suspicion that he has committed several criminal offenses, such as violently resisting public order officers, violating traffic rules and driving a vehicle. Another reason the court took this position is because he is a repeat offender, he committed the same offense two months ago and for the same offense he was under the coercive measure of reporting to the Judicial Police. For this reason, the court rightly, despite the fact that we as the defense were interested in a lighter measure, ordered detention in prison. The suspect admitted that he committed this offense, despite the fact that he was under the influence of alcohol and could not remember many things, his alcohol level was 1.4, very high, but he maintained an affirmative and repentant stance during the hearing," said the lawyer.
The incident was recorded on Saturday evening in the former Kënetë area of Durrës, just a few meters from the site of the tragic accident that took the lives of two minors and injured a third.
According to information, the police were notified by residents of the area about a driver who was driving at high speed and in an uncontrolled manner in neighborhood 17. During the police pursuit, Abazaj is suspected of having moved the vehicle in reverse and crashed into the officers' car in an attempt to escape.
