In his testimony before investigators, Nikoll Radaçi gave his version of the circumstances of the tragic accident in Durrës, where two minor children lost their lives. He claims that he swerved to avoid another vehicle that, according to him, suddenly came out of an alley, then ended up on the sidewalk where the children were.
According to the statements, after the collision he was unable to stop immediately, but continued for a few meters. He then got out of the vehicle and asked employees of a nearby store to notify the police, waiting at the scene until the officers arrived.
"Around 2:00 p.m. I left the house with the vehicle with the license plate AB 909 PC and was going to pick up a work tool from a friend of mine. I was driving in the right lane, suddenly a vehicle came out of a neighborhood alley, I swerved to avoid this vehicle and ended up on the sidewalk on the left side of the road. After getting on the sidewalk, I was involved in an accident with some children who were on the sidewalk. The vehicle I was driving failed to stop and I went a few meters ahead. I got out of the car and went to a nearby store where I told the store employees to notify the police after I had an accident. I stayed at the store until the police arrived and took me to the police station ," he says.
The 57-year-old faces charges of “leaving the scene of an accident” and “driving a vehicle in an erratic manner.” During questioning, he stated that he does not remember details about the other vehicle that, according to him, caused the detour, and claimed that he did not know the children.
Regarding the speed, Radaçi stated that he was driving at around 30 km/h. Meanwhile, regarding the alcohol test, he admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages before driving.
"Before driving, I had a beer in the morning," he said.
According to official data, Nikoll Radaçi was born in Mirdita and lives in Durrës, and has a 7-year education.
