The perpetrator of the murder, Mark Samson, and the victim Ilaria Sula

The hearing in the courtroom, where the mother of Mark Samson, the perpetrator of the murder of Albanian student Ilaria Sula on March 26, 2025, testified, ended after about six hours.

At its conclusion, Nors Manlapaz was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison for aggravated conspiracy to conceal the corpse.

According to reports, she also asked to approach to greet and apologize to Ilaria's mother, Gezime Sula, but the latter refused.

During her testimony, Manlapaz recounted what happened between March 24 and 26, when her son slept in an unusual manner in his parents' apartment on Via Homs. She also spoke about his relationship with Ilarian and the moments leading up to the crime.

"I heard them talking loudly from the room, arguing. So I went to knock on the door, worried. Mark said to me: 'Mom, we're talking alone.' A little later, I heard Ilarian in the room screaming and saying: 'What are you going to do now?' I tried to go inside, but he told me twice: 'Mom, wait.'" Samson's mother said.

She further described the moment she saw the victim's body.

"I remember seeing a lot of blood on the floor, around Ilaria's head. Mark took me to my room and asked: 'Mom, do we have any suitcases?' Then he told me to go buy bags and detergent. He used paper towels to clean the blood and I gave him some old clothes. I said: 'Remove most of the blood,'" added the defendant's mother, who was present in court and is expected to be questioned again at the next hearing on March 17.

According to her testimony, after the boy left the house, she tried to clean the room.

"When Mark left the house, I cleaned his room; there was a lot of blood on the floor. I took Ilaria's backpack with her clothes inside and threw them all away. Then I emptied Mark's trash can; there were condoms inside," the woman said. "I'm so sorry for Ilaria's love, but I got scared and thought about my first son," she added.

The victim's parents reacted strongly to her testimony.

"Why didn't you intervene when you heard Ilaria screaming from Mark's room? Why didn't you call the police when her son opened the door and she saw Ilaria's body? Maybe she was still alive. But instead, she didn't stop him," said Flamur and Gëzime Sula, the parents of Albanian student Ilaria Sula.

"Coming to court is a wound for us too. We haven't seen Ilaria in a year, there is no excuse for something like this," they added.

Meanwhile, Rome prosecutors, coordinated by deputy prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini, have charged Mark Samson with intentional murder with the aggravating circumstance of premeditation.

His trial will continue on March 17 with the defendant's arraignment. According to the investigation, he stabbed his ex-girlfriend three times in the neck, then stuffed her body into a suitcase and threw it off a cliff in the Capranica Prenestina area.
