From police officer to "drug baron", Gëzim Çela is

The Ministry of Justice has announced today that Gëzim Çelaj, known as the "drug lord", who was arrested in Kosovo, will be extradited to Albania.

It is considered one of the biggest cocaine and heroin trafficking centers in Europe.

Çelaj is accused of drug trafficking and organized criminal group.

His extradition will be carried out with a simplified procedure, while according to the announcement it is learned that he himself has given his consent to be extradited to Albania.

"Citizen Gëzim Çelaj alias Çela, son of Xhemal and Fatima, born on 04.07.1968, in Krujë, will be extradited from Kosovo to Albania.

His extradition will be carried out with a simplified procedure, and following the communication on this request for extradition, the Ministry of Justice of Kosovo, with the email dated 26.02.2024, forwarded the notification of the Kosovar justice authorities on decision No. 05179662, dt. 11.01.2024 of the Basic Court in Ferizaj/Kosovo, for allowing the simplified extradition of this citizen, because this citizen has given his consent to be extradited to Albania.

The request for the extradition of the aforementioned citizen is based on:

-Decision No. 110, dated 08.10.2023 of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, for assigning to him the security measure "Arrest in prison", for committing the criminal offenses "Trafficking of narcotics" committed in cooperation, in the form of the structured criminal group "Structured criminal group" and "Commitment of criminal offenses by the structured criminal group", provided by articles 283/a, 28, 333/a and 334 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Albania.

-Decision No. 102, dated 30.09.2015 of the Court of First Instance for Serious Crimes in Tirana, amended by Decision No. 121, dated 07.12.2015, of the Court of Appeal for Serious Crimes for his sentence of 10 years and 8 months in prison, for committing the criminal offenses "Trafficking in narcotics", carried out in cooperation, "Production and sale of narcotics" , carried out in cooperation with "Illegal possession and production of weapons, explosive weapons and ammunition", provided by articles 283/a/2, 2283/2, 278/3 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Albania", the announcement states.

Gëzim Çela is suspected of using his villa in Fushë Kuqe for drug trafficking. Right there, the police found 18 kilos of cocaine, 150 kilos of cannabis sativa and seized 9 guns, 3 snipers, grenades and armored cars.

When the drug arrived in Albania, it was sent to Gëzim Cela's villa in Fushë Kuqe, from where it was distributed to Western countries. Çela had turned the family's villa into a laboratory for mixing drugs. Çela was wanted as the head of this drug trafficking network.

For him, there is a sentence from the Italian court with 11 years of imprisonment, as well as a 150,000 euro fine, under the charge of international drug trafficking.  

Gëzim Çela, before being implicated in drug trafficking and being the head of a cocaine trafficking gang, was an officer of the Special Police Forces. He held this position before 1997.
