The Court of Appeal in Thessaloniki has sentenced the 27-year-old Albanian, who hit the 21-year-old woman to death in Greece, to 16.6 years in prison.
The court heard the circumstances of the incident, where it was evident that the Albanian was driving the vehicle at high speed and had hit the young woman to death. He was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.
The defense had asked to change the charge of street murder, but the court rejected this request.
After the announcement of the verdict with 16.6 years in prison for the Albanian, the victim's mother, who was present in the courtroom, also reacted.
"Have a good time", addressed the Albanian, the mother of the 21-year-old deceased.
Contrary to the defense party's claims, the Prosecutor's Office stated in the session that the car was moving at a high speed above the allowed rate, otherwise, the prosecution argued, "it would not have blown the pedestrian into the air".
The 21-year-old from Chania, the island of Crete, boarded a plane at midnight to go to Thessaloniki, as she was going to meet her friends there. Shortly after 1 am, Emma got off the plane and headed to her friends house.
When she crossed Egnatia Street in the center of Thessaloniki, she was "thrown" into the air by a car. The car was driven by the 26-year-old Albanian. But it doesn't end there, after hitting him, the 26-year-old turned back and crushed him again with the new car. After dragging him and crushing him again, the Albanian disappeared from the scene, at least that's what the eyewitnesses claimed.
A few hours were enough for the young man to surrender to the police as a sign of repentance, where he also asked to communicate with her parents. Making excuses, the young man stated that he left the scene because he lived in Greece without papers. A criminal proceeding has been initiated against him.
In his testimony, he said that he was devastated by this event and if the victim had not tried to cross the 'Egnatia' road (where she died), nothing would have happened, it was enough for the young woman to cross the white lines .
According to the prosecutor's prosecution, the 26-year-old is accused of dangerous driving resulting in serious bodily injury (criminal offense), as well as driving without a license (misdemeanor).
