The Federal Judicial Police of Limburg, in cooperation with special units of the federal police and customs, seized a shipment of 320 kilograms of marijuana with a street value of 3 million euros. At the same time, two Albanians were also arrested in Lanaken.
The investigating judge in Tongeren arrested and imprisoned the two suspects. The drugs were destined for the Belgian market and came from the US state of California. This is extraordinary, because there are also many drug plantations in the border region. Cannabis is usually grown locally and then distributed further. But cannabis abroad is on the rise.
It is a trend that has been observed at a national level according to the Central Directorate for the Fight against Serious and Organized Crime (DJSOC) and Centrex, the central drug department of the federal police. Countries and states where cannabis is at least partially legalized, such as California, Canada and Thailand, appear to be important suppliers of marijuana to Western European countries.
This is the case in Belgium, but marijuana from those areas is also found in neighboring countries such as the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. The Limburg FGP continues the investigation.
