One of the creators of an Oscar-winning documentary about Palestinian communities in the West Bank was attacked in the occupied territory on Monday after being arrested by the Israeli army.

Hamdan Ballal, the director of "No Other Land," a joint Palestinian-Israeli production that won an Oscar this year, was attacked by a group of Israeli settlers, wrote Yuval Abraham, his co-director at X.

"They beat him on the head and all over his body. While wounded and bleeding, the soldiers entered the ambulance he had called and arrested him. They beat him on the head and all over his body. While wounded and bleeding, the soldiers entered the ambulance he had called and arrested him ," Abraham said.

The Israeli military denied that it had seized any Palestinians from inside an ambulance. The incident occurred as dozens of Israeli settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Susiya in the southern West Bank, an area featured in Ballal's documentary, the activist group Center for Jewish Nonviolence told The Associated Press. The group added that soldiers blindfolded Ballal and took him away.

" Ballal has since disappeared and it is unclear whether he is receiving medical treatment or what is happening to him ," Abraham added.

Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, a long-time critic of Israel's military operations in Gaza, expressed "disappointment" at reports that Ballal had been "lynched" and called for "maximum diplomatic and economic sanctions" against Israel in a post on X .
