Two Albanian thieves have been jailed for four years and eight months each after robbing seven properties, including the home of a former Aston Villa and Birmingham City footballer. According to British media, Denis Puka, 28, and Erisjan Laska, 29, along with an unidentified third person, carried out a series of robberies over three consecutive nights last June.

Judge Steven Everett called their operation "sophisticated and well-planned" after they booked an Airbnb room in Warrington and moved out of the area to use it as a base from which to carry out their criminal offences.

Their car was a Seat Leon transported from Sheffield, which was fitted with 3 forged number plates during the raids.

The defendants were equipped with masks, tools and hand-held radios. The home of former Aston Villa player Scott Hogan, who now plays as a striker for Milton Keynes Dons, was among the properties targeted between June 5 and 7.

Hogan, 33, was awakened by the light of an electric light shining through his bedroom window at around 11:30pm on June 7. Prosecutor Nardeen Nemat said the footballer's then-pregnant wife and young daughter were also in the house at the time.

“The defendants climbed over the fence and entered the garden. One defendant climbed over the shoulder of another and climbed over the lattice of the house to reach the bedroom window. Hogan was in his bedroom when he was awakened by an electric light shining through his bedroom window. He looked outside to see three men on the ground. Hogan ran after them, but they ran away,” the prosecutor said.

Nothing was stolen, the prosecutor said, but Hogan had since installed a new security system to protect his young family. In a personal statement read in court, Hogan said the incident had “led to many sleepless nights of stress and anxiety.”

"I cannot fully express in words what a dramatic effect this has had on me and my family," he said.

Two other homes were targeted that evening. In one of them they were able to enter, ransacking every room except the bedroom where their victims slept.

The defendants raided properties in Grappenhall, Knutsford and Northwich the following night. They again escaped empty-handed from the first two raids, but stole a Breitling watch and a Rolex watch worth a total of £9,000 from a residence in Northwich while the homeowners were on holiday.

The defendants were arrested after their Seat Leon car was found in a housing estate a week later with various items inside, including mobile phones, the defendants' clothing, tools and false registration plates.

Before handing down the sentence, Judge Everett said: "What is clear is that this was a sophisticated and well-planned conspiracy. Each of you must understand the great destruction you caused by your selfish and despicable actions. Hogan was awakened by an electric shock to the face. What a frightening and terrifying experience that must have been."

He noted that Laska's statement before the verdict showed that he was "minimizing his criminal acts."

"You're just going to blame everyone else. I'm pretty sure you feel offended. It's time you woke up and realized the great trauma caused by what you did," the judge said.

The court heard that Laska, who has a previous conviction for two minor driving offences, is a father of two young children, married to a British woman and had made “an application to the Home Office which is currently pending”.

Lawyer Phil Astbury, who defended Puka, said his client has been granted indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom.

"He has no previous convictions and is said to come from a very good family. His mother is shocked by what he has done. He is a young man of good positive character and with a good work career who contributes to the community in every way," said the lawyer.

Laska and Puka pleaded guilty in a previous hearing to 7 counts of committing burglary.
